JAN HAGENKÖTTER

  • PART II

Jan Hagenkötter a music-lover, producer and DJ who is also the mind behind the internationally renowned music publishing company and record label INFRACom! relocated to Saigon in 2011/12.

During this period he got his hands on the first Vietnamese pre 75 singles through “Datodeo” a friend and well established DJ and record collector based in Saigon. In the following years he began to research and collect more seriously. He went back and forth between Vietnam and Germany. He bought vinyl singles in Vietnam and from all around the world. Often several copies of the same release, just to restore or rather “rebuild” one good recording from several sources. With the help of many friends he was able to navigate an almost impenetrable jungle of music websites. Thanks to invaluable support and translation assistance from Vietnamese friends, he came into contact with several collectors over the years who either gave him digitalised recordings or let him record directly from their old reel to reel tapes. The best recordings from this treasure hunt were then retouched, refined and remastered in the studio.

Finally, after several years in the making in 2017 he was able to announce the Saigon Supersound Compilation series that tells the story of a musical era in Vietnam that was almost lost. A selection of tracks from the period between 1964 and 1975, the so-called “Golden Music” period in the south of Vietnam, where – under difficult circumstances – a lively pop culture had developed and disappeared after the Vietnam war ended. A period characterised by the fusion of Vietnamese music with Western pop music. The first release was followed by second edition in 2018. The same year Jan Hagenkötter relocated to Vietnam again to produce "Họa Âm Xưa", the debut album of Saigon Soul Revival. With this release Saigon Supersound was expanded into a sub-label of his existing brand INFRACom! Beside several remix releases to Saigon Soul Revival debut album in 2020, a 7inch release exclusive to the pre75 versions of the song “Sài Gòn” by singer Trúc Mai followed in 2021. The two extensively restored pre75 mixes are supplemented with a 2021 edit Jan Hagenkötter, who tries to preserve the vibes of the original and at the same time to wrap it in a contemporary garment.

Jan Hagenkötter also presents the music as DJ and speaker on shows in Vietnam and abroad. Often in connection with the band Saigon Soul Revival.
